About the role

What you’ll learn

  • Extensive film-stock testing across different formats and emulsions, including 35mm and 120.
  • Hands-on testing and evaluation of vintage and modern film cameras.
  • Practical exposure to darkroom film-processing workflows.
  • An understanding of C-41, black-and-white and experimental film chemistries.
  • Film scanning and digitisation workflows used in professional labs.
  • The fundamentals of film handling, storage and quality control.
  • Exposure to film-community initiatives, workshops and events at The Panchrome Project.

What you’ll work on

  • Assist in testing and documenting new film stocks.
  • Support camera-testing and sample-shooting sessions.
  • Assist with darkroom processing and lab-workflow preparation.
  • Help archive, catalogue and maintain film-evaluation notes.
  • Contribute to educational content and documentation around film photography.

Requirements

Core requirements

  • A strong interest in film photography and analogue processes.
  • A basic understanding of exposure, ISO, aperture and shutter speed.
  • A willingness to learn the characteristics of 35mm and 120 film stocks.
  • An interest in darkroom workflows and film-development processes.
  • Comfort handling film cameras and related equipment.

Technical and practical skills

  • Basic experience shooting film or digital photography.
  • An understanding of different lighting conditions and exposure techniques.
  • The ability to follow structured processes and instructions - important for lab work.
  • Close attention to detail when handling film, negatives and scans.
  • Basic knowledge of image organisation and file handling.

Mindset and approach

  • Curious and willing to experiment and learn through practice.
  • Patient and detail-oriented - essential for analogue workflows.
  • Open to hands-on, repetitive tasks such as film testing and cataloguing.
  • Able to observe, document and analyse results.

Good to have

  • Experience shooting on film cameras.
  • Prior exposure to black-and-white, C-41 or E-6 film development.
  • Familiarity with different film stocks.
  • A basic understanding of film-scanning workflows.
